Ha Gorge of Ierapetra

The imposing Gorge of Ha is considered the most beautiful technical gorge in Crete. It is formed on the western side of Mount Thrypti and transports the waters from the plateau of Thripti to the isthmus of Ierapetra, which are then moved on the beach of Pachia Ammos. The entrance of the gorge is located below the Byzantine church of Saint Anne (Agia Anna) at an altitude of about 800m, next to the European footpath E4 that connects the Minoan settlement of Vasiliki with Thripti. Its exit, reminiscent of a knife that has cut the mountain in two, is located at an altitude of 100m, next to the village Monastiraki.

The gorge is technical, as it forms waterfalls and crossing requires canyoneering equipment and special training. The first descent took place in 1987 by Stavros LazaridisVlasis Hatzipanagiotou and Chronis Amatzidis. The gorge is bolted with a relay by the speleological clubs of Crete. It has 33 descents, with the largest being 35m high. In winter there are many ponds and several natural slides. Its width in many places is only thirty centimeters, but it does not exceed three meters. On the right and left, perpendicular cliffs raise at a height of 200 to 400 meters, excluding any possibility of escaping from the sides. In the last one-third of the gorge, the waterfall Mastoras falls in the gorge from a height 215m, which is one of the highest known free falls in Greece and increases the amount of water in Ha stream. It is quite common for the gorge to be dry up to that point and to have large amounts of water from there on.

Napoleo's House At Ierapetra

In the summer of 1798 the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte conducted his campaign against the Mamluks in Egypt to protect the French trade in the region and to block the access of the Brits in India. During his trip to the east it is said to have stayed for a night in a house in Ierapetra.

Nobody noticed that it was him, until the family that hosted him, after his departure, saw a handwritten note that read in French “If you want to know who your stranger was, know that I am Napoleon Bonaparte‘.

This story has not been confirmed, but the legend of Napoleon remains vivid in the town of Ierapetra. You will see the name Napoleo even in taverns and cafes. The house has been bought by the municipality of Ierapetra and you can find it in the neighborhood of Kato Mera, near the harbor.

Fort Kalés at Ierapetra

The fort Kales in Ierapetra was built by the Venetians in the 13th century AD, to protect the town of Ierapetra from its enemies. In 1508 it was destroyed by an earthquake and the Ottoman raids. The damage was not repaired, perhaps because it was very serious and there was no funding.

When the town of Ierapetra was occupied by the Turks in 1647, the fortress was repaired and used for the defense of the town. The name Kales comes from that period, since it comes from the Turkish word “kule“, which means tower.

All these years Kales dominates the entrance to the old harbor of Ierapetra, witnessing the history of the city. Today you can visit the castle and watch the cultural events organized by the local municipality.

Vai palmgrove

Vai is located 94km east of Agios Nikolaos and 24km east of Sitia. It is the most famous beach in east Crete, as its main feature is the large palm grove with the Cretan Date Palm (Phoenix theophrasti). Its name derives from the word vai, meaning palm in Greek. The palm grove is the largest in Europe with approximately 5000 trees, while there are smaller colonies in other parts of Crete and in Southwest Turkey. According to the legend, the trees have grown from discarded date stones thrown into the sea by Saracen pirates. However, the palm grove is more than 2000 years old and the pirates are more recent. Thus this hypothesis has changed and the Saracens have been replaced with Phoenicians, that governed the Mediterranean Sea 20 centuries ago.
